2nd Symposium Cyprus Safety Platform

KEMEA participated in the 2nd Cyprus Safety Platform Symposium which took place on 30rd January 2013, in the Cultural Center of European University Cyprus, in Engkomi, Nicosia, Cyprus.

The Keynote Speech has been delivered by Dr Alan Waring, a consultant and authoritative writer on major hazard risks, and it should be stressed that a significant number of Academics and Researchers, Policy Makers, Enforcement Agencies and Safety & Risk Professionals who take part in the Platform, attended the Symposium.

The Cyprus Safety Platform has been created aiming to:

• Promote research on safety

• Initiate a two-way communication between social fora and professional bodies with academics to create a research agenda that responds to real safety & risk problems

• Transfer existing knowledge as well as knowledge from future research projects from academia to social and professional bodies

• Promote a culture of safety in the society

KEMEA made a detailed presentation of its profile and participation in major European Research Projects related with Security sector and more specifically presenting Project regarding:

• Man-made catastrophes (e.g. mega-fires, explosions, environmental contamination, infrastructure damage etc)

• Safety management

• Major Hazards Risk assessment and risk management

• Emergency preparedness and response

• Use of Satellites and GIS before and during the catastrophe (remote sensing / GIS and geoinformatics for hazards identification)

♦ Explosions and their impact on structures

♦ Critical Infrastructures Protection

During the Symposium procedures, the Cyprus Safety Platform organised a One Day Workshop on Man Made Catastrophes.

Finally, within the framework of their common field of operations, and actions, KEMEA and the EUC signed a Μemorandum of Understanding aiming at the expansion of their collaboration.
